Your kitchen is the place where you make most of the food for your day. So many things pass the kitchen worktops, leaving behind bacteria that can make us ill when preparing food. Here are four things you should not do with your kitchen worktops.
Don’t Leave Food on There
A lot of people take items out of the bridge and put them straight on the kitchen worktop. When moving the food, you can often leave crumbs or parts of the food which are not so easy to spot. If it isn’t cleaned, your sides could be contaminated as there will be bacteria and mold. Then more food is put on there, and you could end up with food poisoning. Even if it’s still in its packaging, you don’t know how many hands have been on there. Before putting food on the side, you should make sure it’s clean. Put the food on a chopping board or a plate instead of straight on the side. A liquid can be just as dangerous so if juice or milk has got on the side, make sure it’s cleaned straight away.
Don’t Chop Food on There
Another thing people do on their worktops is to chop food on there. You should never cut food on there because you could end up damaging the surface. You don’t want to end up having to get them replaced because they have permanent marks on there from the knife you have been using. Buy yourself a good set of chopping boards which you can use for cutting different foods so you don’t have to use the worktops. Use a plate if you can’t afford to buy cutting boards. And if you do get permanent marks on there, you may want to find a company who offers a stylish kitchen benchtop. Having no marks means you may be able to sell your home quicker in the future.
Don’t Put Your Kids On There
A lot of people put the kids on the sides while they are preparing food. But you don’t know what bacteria might be hiding on the worktop sides. Also, if you look away for a second, they could end up flat on their face on the kitchen floor as they will fall off there. You don’t know what they will grab while they are on the side that they could end up damaging themselves with. Put them safely in a moses basket while you are preparing food in the kitchen, and get your partner or an older child to keep an eye on them.
Don’t Put Hot Trays On There
Unless you want to damage your worktops, you need to ensure that you don’t put hot trays on there that have just come out of the oven. Heat damage can cause permanent marks which will make them look less attractive. Put any hot trays on top of the stove, or straight in the sink and run the cold tap.
Following the above will ensure your worktops stay nicer for longer.
