How to Make Landscape Design Choices

By Neil Dodson · On August 16, 2017

When it comes to making landscape design choices, you might feel like you’re in some unfamiliar territory. As far as home-improvement goes, you might be much more familiar with interior design rather than trying to figure out how to make the outside look good.

But, if you want a few tips to make solid decisions, you can do things like pick patterns to follow, choose colors that suit your vision, think about maintenance over the long-term, and take small steps concerning overarching design concepts.

Pick Some Patterns

Patterns are important when it comes to landscaping. So, if you have any paving work that needs to be accomplished, choosing the right style and design of those stones or materials is going to be central to creating your ideal. There are an infinite number of choices when it comes to size, color, and texture, but the worst thing that you can do is approach the decision randomly or arbitrarily. Choose your pattern wisely, and the rest of the design should follow naturally. If you need some inspiration, look at the patterns of other people’s driveways and sidewalks and see how they’ve done their work.

Pick Some Colors

Another big decision when it comes to landscape design is concerning color. If your house isn’t going to change color from what it is currently, then that visual stamp is going to be your ideal starting point. If you look up color palettes that you find pleasing, you’ll find a wide array of options that professionals have put together that you can use as a baseline. Depending on what sort of general theme you gravitate toward naturally, it shouldn’t be that difficult of a decision once you have your central focus in mind.

Think About Maintenance

The last thing you want is to create an impressive landscape and then find out you can’t maintain it. The more complicated your design elements, the more you’re going to have to work at them during the year. If you are going to have the time to spend on doing things like pruning and trimming, and it’s probably a better idea to go with simple ideas at least to start.

Take Small Steps

Trying to do too much at once can create issues eventually. So ideally, decide on an overall theme that you want to accomplish, and then take small steps to get there. Knowing your theme ahead of time is a great way to make sure that you stay on budget as well. If you plan on having some third-party contractor work through your landscape design, then small steps will also ensure that you’re happy with everything as it goes along, rather than being upset at the result if it doesn’t match your vision.
