Check Your Home
Examine places in your home where your pet spends a majority of their time relaxing or napping such as pet beds, crates, and rugs. Be sure to check the edges, folds, and corners.
If your pet spends time on your couch or sofa, inspect under the cushions and all cushion corners and folds. Examine the behind the cushions and back and arms of your sofa.
Check all baseboards for tick activity. Use a flashlight so you can see the ticks and won’t mistake them for specs of dirt.
Check windows and doors frames since ticks may enter your home through entryways. If your home has a pet door, start your inspection there.
Check Your Yard
Start your yard inspection with shaded areas since ticks do not like sunlight. These areas are firewood, piles or accumulation of leaves.
If you have a dog house, inspect inside and outside especially close to the ground and in the corners. If it contains a pet bed, check under the bed and the edges of the bed.
Check retaining walls especially if they are brick or rock.
If you have a dense or tall brush, grass, or bush, they must be inspected also.
Pay attention to areas where your dog spends most of his time sleeping or relaxing.
Your search can be simplified if you use a clean white cloth mop. This type of mop can be purchased at your local dollar store. Move the mop along the places you are inspecting. If ticks exist in that area, they will jump onto the mop and can be easily seen.
Check Your Pets
Brush and groom your pets frequently, especially in the summertime or if they spend a lot of time outdoors. If ticks are present, you will feel one or more bumps when running your fingers through their fur. Apply gentle pressure when feeling their fur so that you can feel the skin.
Check your pet’s tail, eyes, armpits, genitals, ears, toes, and armpits. Don’t forget to look under their collar.
If your dog is scratching more than usual, examine the area of his body he is scratching for signs of ticks. Scratching accompanied with shaking is a strong sign there are ticks present.
Regularly stay on the lookout for ticks in your home, yard, or on your pet, especially during the summertime. If you detect ticks in your home, seek tick treatment immediately. For effective and thorough elimination of a tick infestation, professional tick treatment must be performed.
